Academic Policies for Social Welfare Majors

Academic Accommodations

To be eligible for disability-related academic adjustments or accommodations, a student must obtain a Letter of Accommodation (LOA) from the Disabled Students Program (DSP). All students who are active in the DSP are assigned a Disability Specialist, who can assist with questions or concerns about accommodation letters. It is the student's responsibilty to register with DSP and seek any necessary accommodations in a timley manner. If LOAs are not requested in a timely manner, it may not be possible to provide accommodations in a timely manner. Faculty responsibility for providing accommodations begins once your LOA has been generated and notice of your LOA has been sent to your faculty.

Students registered with the Disabled Students Program (DSP) should inform their Social Welfare instructors of any required academic accommodations as soon as LOAs have been sent, so that accommodations can be arranged in a timely manner. For information and instructions for how to request academic accommodations, please visit DSP > Accommodations: Requesting Letters of Accommodation.

Repeating a Core Class

College of Letters and Science policy allows a student who received a grade of D+, D, D-, or F to repeat the class one time in order to improve the grade. To learn more about repeat policies and any potential impacts, please visit L&S Advising > Repeating Courses.

Study Abroad Courses for Social Welfare Major Requirements

Students who take a semester abroad from UC Berkeley often want to use classes taken at the other institution to fulfill requirements. Education Abroad coursework may be used to fulfill social science elective requirements when approved in advance. Coursework taken abroad is not allowed to fulfill core course requirements. If you are interested in using courses taken abroad to fulfill elective requirements, contact the Undergraduate Adviser prior to going abroad. You will be requested to provide syllabi of your proposed courses to be reviewed for approval.

Transfer Credit Policy

Students who are declared in the Social Welfare undergraduate major may wish to enroll in courses at other universities to meet some of their social work elective requirements. Upper-division transfer credit may be used to fulfill Social Welfare major elective requirements. Please note, these courses must be approved by the Undergraduate Major Adviser and department chair in advance. You will be asked to provide syllabi of the courses for review prior to approval. Please consult the undergraduate adviser for assistance.

Transfer credit may not count towards any of the Social Welfare core classes (i.e., SOC WEL 110, 112, 114, or the Focused Topic Core Course requirement).
