Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare

Since 1942 we have offered the undergraduate major in Social Welfare leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, under the jurisdiction of the College of Letters and Science.

Master of Social Welfare (MSW)

Berkeley Social Welfare's fully-accredited MSW Program develops future leaders of the profession who are deeply prepared for multi-level social work in specific areas of practice.  

Special program options are available within the MSW Program for enhanced and expanded learning:

  • Concurrent Degree Program in Public Health (MSW+MPH)
    Berkeley Social Welfare and the School of Public Health offer a concurrent program for students preparing for careers that span both social welfare and public health.
  • Concurrent Degree Program in Public Policy (MSW-MPP)
    Berkeley Social Welfare and the Goldman School of Public Policy jointly offer a concurrent degree program leading to the MSW and MPP degrees.
  • Graduate Certificate in Aging
    The UC Berkeley Graduate Certificate in Aging focuses on ameliorating the physical, psychosocial, familial, cultural, ethnic, racial, organizational, and societal factors which serve as barriers to physical and emotional well-being in later life.
  • School Social Work Credentialing Program (PPSC)
    Berkeley Social Welfare offers a curriculum in school social work practice, leading to eligibility for a recommendation from the School for the Pupil Personnel Services Credentials (PPSC) issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Social Work with Latinos Certificate (SWLC)
    The Social Work with Latinos Certificate (SWLC) Program offers a learning environment and professional network to enhance the skills of social work graduate students in culturally competent practices that improve the lives of Latino individuals, families, and communities.

PhD in Social Welfare

Berkeley Social Welfare's doctoral program develops scholars who make significant contributions to the field of social welfare through excellent teaching, research, and service. A Combined MSW/PhD Program option is also available.
