Professor Organista Honored for Equity, Diversity Work

January 19, 2018

Berkeley Social Welfare Professor Kurt Organista has been named the recipient of the 2017-18 Leon A. Henkin Citation for Distinguished Service, which is awarded annually by UC Berkeley's Commitee of Diversity, Equity and Campus Climate (DECC). The Henkin Citation recognizes current or retired Berkeley faculty "whose career have been marked by a sustained effort to increase the academic success of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in academic disciplines."

"It is especially gratifying to be recognized for doing inherently rewarding work — mentoring work to nurture and enhance the scholarship of our richly diverse students in social welfare and across campus," notes Dr. Organista. "Latino students in social welfare and across campus hunger for guidance with Latino scholarship and to see themselves in the academy. It is an honor to do my part to address these important needs."

In the DECC award letter, Committee Chair Annette Vissing-Jorgensen commends his "involvement in outreach and mentoring efforts directed at diversity among our student population."

Dr. Organista will be presented his citation at the Academic Senate recognition event on May 9, 2018.
