Berkeley Social Welfare Professor Emerita and alumna Jewelle Taylor Gibbs and her husband Dr. James Gibbs have been featured in The New York Timesas part of the publication's "Committed: 165 Years of Love (and War) in The New York Times Wedding Announcements" series.
In the profile article, titled "A Couple Used to Breaking the Color Line," Dr. Taylor Gibbs notes, "Our families were pleased and proud that the [wedding] announcements were included on the social pages, but we were also keenly aware that this editorial decision was symbolic and reflected the changing racial attitudes in American society.”
