External Funding Opportunities and Awards

Many Berkeley Social Welfare students have been successful at securing extramural funding through additional university, public, and privately sponsored fellowships.

Extramural awards are made from a variety of outside funding sources, including government agencies; professional and alumni organizations; private foundations; and corporations. We actively encourage all graduate students to apply for extramural funding, particularly doctoral students seeking dissertation support.

Designated Emphases

Social Welfare PhD students have the opportunity to apply to a Designated Emphasis (DE) program that complements their doctoral studies. This is a chance for students to collaborate with faculty from other departments who specialize in the chosen DE area. Students should consult with their faculty advisor to discuss their decision to add a DE prior to forming their Qualifying Exam Committee.
