September 13, 2017

Berkeley Social Welfare Assistant Professor Anu Manchikanti Gomezhas been named one of this year's 120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders.

The three-year program annually honors 40 reproductive health and family planning leaders, service providers, researchers and advocates throughout the globe. Now in its second year, 120 Under 40 is led by the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Winners were selected through a combination of public online voting, scoring by an expert panel and the project secretariat.

Dr. Gomez and each winner will receive $1,000 in support of their work. She plans to use the grant money to "launch new work regarding underlying tensions between providers' roles and approaches that advance reproductive autonomy, such as over-the-counter contraceptive access and IUD self-removal."

"This research will be translated into actionable insights to reduce inequities in FP care and access," she notes. "As a committed educator, I will engage students in the research to develop the next generation of FP leaders."
