Concurrent Degree Admissions

Applicants to established concurrent degree programs must meet all eligibility requirements and admissions standards of both UC Berkeley Social Welfare and those of the respective concurrent degree program, including any examination requirements of other programs (GRE, etc.). The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for the MSW-only Program. Applications are reviewed and evaluated by faculty admissions committees from both UC Berkeley Social Welfare and the administering faculty of the chosen concurrent degree, applying the same admissions requirements for concurrent degree students as for all other applicants. To be accepted into the Concurrent Degree Program, applicants must be recommended for admission by both schools.

MSW/MPH Concurrent Degree Program Applicants

The SOPHAS application is not required for applicants to the Social Welfare & Public Health MSW/MPH Concurrent Degree program. There are no additional materials required for the MSW/MPH Concurrent Degree application.

MSW/MPP Concurrent Degree Program Applicants

Applicants to the Social Welfare & Public Policy MSW/MPP Concurrent Degree program are required to submit a Statement of Purpose for both programs. For instructions for the Goldman School of Public Policy (GSPP) Policy Statement of Purpose, please see the GSPP Applying for Concurrent Degree Programs departmental website.

For admission to Fall 2026, GSPP requires the GRE in the MPP application.

MSW/JD Concurrent Degree Program

Prospective and current Berkeley graduate students interested in pursuing the concurrent degree program must apply and be admitted independently to both schools. Each school has separate admissions requirements and application processes. Applications for admission may be submitted:

  • At the same time during the same application cycle for new applicants to graduate study at Berkeley.
  • During the first year of graduate study for current Social Welfare MSW students.
  • During the first or second year in the JD program for current Berkeley Law students.

Each school reviews applications and makes admission recommendation decisions independently.
