Achievement Awards

Annual Achievement Awards & Prizes for Social Welfare Students

These awards recognizing student achievement and distinction are presented in the spring semester of each year at the annual Haviland Scholars Day Awards and Recognition ceremony. 

Dean's Award for Academic Achievement ($500)
Presented to the undergraduate Social Welfare student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has achieved the greatest degree of academic performance among undergraduates. The Undergraduate Program Committee solicits nominations from the faculty in the spring of each year.

Dean's Award for Outstanding Community Service ($500)
Presented to an undergraduate Social Welfare student who, through their hard-working and visionary efforts, embodies the mission of the School of Social Welfare by making a significant contribution to the community. The Undergraduate Program Committee solicits nominations from undergraduate students in the spring of each year.

Dean’s Award for Social Justice ($1,000)
This award is presented to an individual MSW student or group of MSW students who have exemplified outstanding advocacy for social justice in the past year. The Dean’s Office solicits open nominations in the spring of each year.

Excellence in Social Work Practice Award ($500)
This award, co-sponsored by the California Chapter of NASW, is given to a graduating MSW student each year based on nominations from field site supervisors. A committee then selects the student they feel most exemplifies social work practice.

Excellence in Social Work Research Award ($500)
This award is presented each year to the graduating MSW student or students who submitted the most outstanding project for the yearlong MSW research course. Nominations are solicited from SW282 instructors in the spring.

The Greenwood Emeritus Faculty Prize in Writing ($1,500)
The Greenwood Prize is awarded to a Master’s-level student or students in Social Welfare demonstrating excellence in writing. Students submit a paper for consideration and selection is made with participation of the School’s Emeriti Professors for an award given at the end of the spring term.

The Ralph M. Kramer Award ($1,500)
The Ralph M. Kramer Award is given annually to an outstanding graduating MSW student in the Management and Planning concentration. MAP faculty makes selection and the award is given at the end of the spring term.

The James and Khadija Midgley Doctoral Award ($3,000)
The Midgley Doctoral Award recognizes the best doctoral dissertation submitted during the year. The dissertation shall have attained a high level of academic distinction and originality. The Doctoral Chair solicits nominations in the Spring semester.

The James Midgley Leadership Award ($1,000)
An annual award to an undergraduate Social Welfare student who demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities. The Undergraduate Program Committee solicits nominations from undergraduate students in the spring of each year.
