Giovanni Velasco Morales

Job title:
MSW Student Ambassador
Bio/CV:

Giovanni Velasco Morales (he/him) is a Graduate Student Ambassador at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare. In this role, he serves as a key point of contact and a supportive resource for prospective applicants and new admits, guiding them through the exciting journey of exploring and beginning their MSW program experience.

As an MSW candidate (expected 2026), Giovanni's academic and professional interests are centered on strengthening inter-agency systems of care to better serve marginalized communities and populations facing poverty, homelessness, and barriers to healthcare access. His personal experiences as an immigrant and low-income first-generation college student as well as professional experiences as a theatre maker in rural communities and a special education teacher have shaped his perspective and current work.

As a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR), Giovanni is currently examining the implementation of CalAIM and the growing field of medical respite/recuperative care. He also works as an intern in the Health and Human Services division at Resource Development Associates (RDA) in Oakland, CA, where he is learning about the delivery of data-driven program evaluation, development, and implementation to achieve systems change within organizations and communities.

Giovanni is the recipient of the 2024 Mabel Winifred Goode Social Welfare Fellowship Fund.
In his free time, Giovanni enjoys long-distance racing (5-10k), traveling with his family, and dancing and singing along to Alvvays with his daughter.
