An article researched and written by Berkeley Social Welfare student Lauren Gonzalves (MSW '14) was recently published in several local publications, including the East Bay Express, which featured her piece as the cover story of the August 7th edition.

"Bred in Abuse" examines the life of Moses Kamin, a former foster youth in Oakland who murdered his adoptive parents in 2012. Gozalves, who begins her second-year in the MSW program this fall, participated in the campus' Journalism for Social Change course, offered through the Goldman School of Public Policy. She also took part in the related summer fellowship program that gives Berkeley graduate students from the School of Social Welfare, Goldman School and the School of Journalism to research and write articles covering various topcial issues, including child welfare policy and foster care.

Gonzalves credits Berkeley Social Welfare Professor Jill Duerr Berrick and Berkeley Law's Joan Hollinger for helping her with the article.
