Excelencia Fellowship

The Excelencia Fellowship was established in Spring 2022 through a partnership with the UC Berkeley Educational Opportunity Program's Transcending Beyond Berkeley program.

Higher education has long been closed off to undocumented students, in part due to the lack of work authorization and other systemic barriers. The Excelencia Fellowship is part of a broader effort to aid undocumented students in moving up the educational ladder by compensating them for their work in local communities while offering a unique opportunity to expand their professional and social networks.

The Excelencia Fellowship provides stipends for two (2) Social Welfare MSW students with an interest in aiding in the professional development of other undocumented students.

The fellowship will feature activities in two domains:

  • Professional Development - all required hours will be fulfilled by MSW field placements as part of the regular degree program; and,
  • Leadership & Facilitation Opportunity - the two fellows will co-facilitate one workshop for undocumented undergraduate students about their journey to graduate school in collaboration with the Educational Opportunity Program to illuminate a diversity of advanced career pathways.

For the 2022-23 academic year, the Excelencia Fellowship will provide financial support, consisting of:

  • An $8,000 cash stipend per fellow ($4,000 each semester for Fall and Spring).
