Procedures for Special Studies Courses in Social Welfare

The following procedures should be used for proposing the following courses:

  • SW 97/197: Individual or Group Field Studies in Social Welfare. A student may propose an individual 97/197 or a group 97/197. These courses typically include community service, as well as meetings and academic assignments. Faculty sponsors are required. The course is taken on a pass/no pass basis.
  • SW 98/198: Group Study for Advanced Undergraduates. This course is for students wishing to propose courses exploring social welfare topics not addressed in the existing curriculum. Faculty sponsors are required. The course is taken on a pass/no pass basis.
  • SW 199: Supervised Independent Study and Research. This course is for students seeking supervised independent study and research on a social welfare topic under the direction of a social welfare faculty member. The course is taken on a pass/no pass basis..

To propose a Special Studies course, the student must:

1. Obtain the appropriate application. Applications can be obtained in the Undergraduate Advising Office (219 Haviland) or download from the left-hand menu above. If students wish to obtain DeCal sponsorship for their course, they must also fill out a DeCal application, available at http://www.decal.org/start/forms.php. DeCal sponsorship is not a requirement for proposing a Special Studies course.

2. Arrange for a faculty sponsor. Students should approach faculty members and request sponsorship. In order to identify prospective sponsors, students should consult the school's webpage (http://socialwelfare.berkeley.edu/) or review the school's yearly announcement (announcements are available outside 120 Haviland). Please note that faculty members on sabbatical are generally not available to sponsor courses.

3. Submit syllabus or lesson plan to faculty sponsor. If a student wishes to propose a 98/198 or group 97/197, they should follow the attached syllabus guidelines and submit a fully drafted syllabus to the prospective faculty sponsor for consideration. If the student is pursing an individual 97/197 or 199, they should draft a proposed learning plan that details the scope of work they propose to complete during the semester. If the faculty member wishes to sponsor the course and approves the syllabus or lesson plan, the faculty sponsor should sign off on the applicable special study course application.

4. Return the original faculty-signed application for approval by the Academic Coordinator or the Associate Dean. The original signed application and copy of the syllabus or learning agreement goes to the Undergraduate Advisor in 219 Haviland. No application will be considered after its deadline.

  • SW 97/197 and SW 199 Applications: DUE by the 3rd Week of the Current Semester.
  • SW 98/198 Applications: DUE no later than 6 weeks before the end of instruction in the previous semester.

If the student has any questions about special studies courses, they may contact the school's academic coordinator, Dr. Paul Terrell at Terrell@berkeley.edu, or the Associate Dean, Andrew Scharlach at scharlac@berkeley.edu .
