Editorial on Improving Mental Healthcare Policies Cites Professor Steven Segal

Op-ed published in wake of Newtown, Conn., tragedy

In the wake of mass shootings that have affected communities across the country, including the recent rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the Sacramento Bee's editorial board released an op-ed calling for renewed consideration of mental healthcare policies as well as increased funding for treatment programs.

According to the newspaper's editorial board, "The fundamental issue that must be confronted is how this nation treats seriously mentally ill individuals."

Among the research cited in the op-ed are studies conducted by School of Social Welfare Professor Steven Segal [Faculty and Staff/Faculty/Steven Segal], particularly his findings noting a correlation between the length of patients' in-hospital stays and their improved chances "to function on the outside when they are released."
