Program Description
The Title IV-E MSW Child Welfare
Training Program prepares up to 20 students each year for careers in public
child welfare services. Students complete a specialized academic
curriculum including two years of field work in either a county
child welfare unit or a closely related agency serving child welfare clients.
Trainees receive annual stipends of $18,500 for two years in exchange
for a commitment to work at least two years in a county child welfare
service agency after graduation.

Requirements
1. The student must be enrolled
full-time in the MSW program.
2. Both years of MSW study must be completed
at UC Berkeley.
3. The student must be enrolled in the Children
and Families concentration. To be considered as an exception, MAP applicants must
demonstrate sufficient direct service experience in the public child
welfare arena.
4. The student must attain minimum competence
in the identified competencies of child welfare practice.
5. One year of field work must be completed
in a county department of social services (DSS) going specific child welfare
tasks.
6. The other year of field work must be completed
in a county (DSS) or in a related non-profit agency which serves
child welfare clients.
7. The student must have a valid California
driver's license.
8. The student must secure the use of a car
as required for field work.
9. The student must agree to a thorough background
check, including the following: driving record, criminal record,
and child abuse record.
10. The student must be either a U.S. citizen
or have the right to be employed in the State of California.
11. The student must work in a California
county child welfare service agency for two years after graduation.

12. If the student is a current employee
of a California county department of social services, the student
must obtain a leave of absence from that county and obtain a letter
of reference from the county department director recommending the
student for the program.
Application
procedure
A Title IV-E Stipend application for the
academic year must be submitted with the MSW application
by the January deadline. Applications will be reviewed and
qualified candidates will be notified of a date for an "In
Person" interview with a panel of Agency/Faculty/ Title IV-E alumni
representatives. A ranking and pre-qualification for a IV-E Stipend
will be established. Final acceptance into the IV-E Program will
depend upon acceptance for admission by the School of Social Welfare
and the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley.

Amount
of Stipend
Up to twenty stipends are awarded annually to entering
the MSW class. The stipend of $18,500 is awarded the first
year and an additional $18,500 is awarded the second year. The stipend
is paid in monthly installments during each academic year.
