Social Welfare Research at Berkeley:
One of the
distinguishing characteristics of Berkeley's School of Social
Welfare is the research and publication record of its faculty.
While faculty members in most American universities are engaged,
to one degree or another, in research, along with teaching and
community and professional service, the relative importance of
these activities varies considerably from place to place. In top-rated
universities, the so-called "research 1" universities, the creation
of new knowledge through systematic investigation is of paramount
importance. Certainly, U.C. Berkeley's reputation, throughout
the world, is based on the achievements of its faculty as scholars.
