Steven
Segal et al. on Self-Help and the Mentally Ill:
The self-help
movement represents one of the most significant developments in
the provision of mental health services in the United States.
Involving consumers as active participants in addressing their
treatment needs has become a key element in health care practice.
Incorporating this ethos, mental health self-help agencies, service
organizations operated primarily by consumers with psychological
disabilities, are proliferating throughout the country with state
legislatures and private foundations lending them increased support.
Given cost-cutting trends, the self-help model has been particularly
popular under managed care arrangements providing, as it does,
a source of inexpensive services.
