Kurt
Organista, Peter Manoleas, and Rafael Herrera on Latino Mental
Health Services
Over the last
two decades, a small but growing number of population-based mental
health surveys have been conducted on large, representative samples
of U.S. Latinos conveying a far more accurate profile of Latino
mental health. For example, the recent Mexican American Prevalence
and Services Survey (MAPSS) assessed mental disorders in adults
of Mexican background in California and examined the relation
between acculturation and risk for mental disorders by comparing
U.S. born Mexican Americans, short-term Mexican immigrants (less
than 13 years in the U.S.), and long-term Mexican immigrants (13
years or more in U.S.).
