Research Interests:

My teaching and research are in the areas of client-centered agency management, strategic planning, community organizing, and policy implementation in both the public and nonprofit human services organizations. My areas of experience include managerial team-building, board development, organizational restructuring, modifying the agency's culture, interagency collaboration, and fostering consumer involvement. My research and administrative practice interests include: public-private partnerships, evidence-based practice (direct service and management), assessing policy implementation, identifying and documenting innovative practices and services, and redefining executive leadership. The laboratories for most of my work include: a) the classroom (pre-service & in-service) involving current and future administrators, planners, and policy analysts; b) the Bay Area Social Services Consortium (staff director) which is a partnership of 12 San Francisco Bay Area county social service directors, 4 deans of schools of social work, and 2 local foundation representatives that focuses on training (executive development), applied action research projects in county social service agencies, and social service policy/program analysis; and c) technical assistance projects with Jewish communal organizations around the country (federations, synagogues, JCCs, women's organizations, and international organizations) related to board development, strategic planning, philanthropy, and executive coaching. I am always interested in talking with people who share some of these interests in order to identify areas of potential collaboration.

Mike Austin on Nonprofit Management:

In order to address the many challenges facing nonprofit human service organizations, a Center on Nonprofit Management was established in 2006 by the Milton and Florence Krenz Mack Trust to provide leadership in building networks at the regional, national, and international levels to support the dissemination of research to improve practice and foster agency-based knowledge management processes. Masters and doctoral Mack Fellowships support the work of the Center under the leadership of Mack Professor of Nonprofit Management.
