Barbara Ivins came to work with infants and young children by a
rather circuitous route. Her graduate training was broadly in biological
psychology, but particularly in animal behavior and naturalistic
field work. Through ethology, she came to study attachment theory
and infancy. When she later retrained in clinical psychology, she
chose to spend three years with the Infant-Parent Program in San
Francisco doing clinical work with infants, toddlers and their parents.
Her passion for that work has continued, and she remains committed
to the infant mental health field. She is currently the clinical
director of the Early Childhood Mental Health and Parent-Infant
Program at Childrens Hospital in Oakland, where she has worked
for the past 20 years providing direct service, supervision to a
multi-disciplinary staff, training, and consultation in the community.
