School of Social Welfare
Computer Resources
2007- 2008 Academic Year ......

Social Welfare Computer Labs & Classrooms:

3 Haviland is the Social Welfare Computer Lab. 3B has 7 workstations and is open for drop-in computing to all students in Social Welfare who have attended an orientation. 3A has 3 workstations and is available for drop-in use as well as for small group meetings, and discussions. There is a scanner available. You may also sign up to use the projector and laptop for presentations. All workstations are connected to networked laser printers..

13 Haviland is the doctoral student computer room. There are 4-6 workstations and a networked printer. Doctoral students are also welcome to use 3 Haviland.

340A Haviland is the Social Welfare/Public Health Shared Classroom. It is available for drop-in use when there is not a class meeting. The schedule of classes is on the door. Should you have problems with those computers or the networked printer, please see Claudia Waters in 3C or David Lein in 301 Haviland.

Hours: 340A is open as long as the building is open. Building hours are M-Th, 7:30 am -7 pm, Fri. 7:30 am-5 pm, Sat 9 am – 5 pm. Holiday hours and schedule changes are posted outside of the Social Welfare Library on the second floor of Haviland Hall.

Wireless connection are available through AIRBEARS. For more information, go to

Purchasing a computer: Our labs and classroom have Dell computers running Windows XP. Our most frequently used programs are Microsoft Office 2003, SPSS, Firefox and Internet Explorer. We will not transition to Vista this year. Files created with Office 2007 can be read by Office 2003. If you purchase a PC and use Office, you should be compatible with our computers. Most Apples computers have programs compatible with those we use in our labs and classroom. Second year research classes use SPSS and versions of SPSS available for Apples are often older than those used in our facilities. However, since students frequently use this program only while at school and because data entry for research projects can be done with Microsoft Excel, this usually does not present a problem for Apple users.

Computer Orientation: To use any of the Computing Facilities, you must do the online computing orientation at: http://socialwelfare.berkeley.edu/computing/computing_Socwel_fall2007.pdf
