The
Uncertain Future of Social Security
At the dawn of the 21st century social security systems throughout
the world are coming under intense pressure for change. In the
industrialized nations the blanket of social security woven from
benefits initiated 60 years ago is being stretched thin as it
tries to cover the fiscal and demographic demands of modern times.
In developing countries there are rising expectations for social
protection against the vicissitudes of old age in changing economies.
Drawing upon the knowledge and experience of experts on social
security arrangements around the world, this conference offers
an international perspective on the policies and programs currently
being designed to meet the challenge of social protection in the
years to come, and the central issues raised by these initiatives.
