nterview with Aron Shlonsky . . . . . .

Aron Shlonsky
MSW, MPH

Research Associate
Center for Social Services Research

What was your first impression of Berkeley, specifically the city and the university campus?

Rarely are you able to find a place where a major city, campus, and natural beauty are so inextricably linked.

How would you describe your fellow graduate students at the School of Social Welfare? How did they effect the quality of your education here?

At first I was intimidated. I was used to being at the top of my class and suddenly I found myself among a group of exceptionally bright people. Over time, these same people became some of my best friends and critics (two words that go together well).

What teacher or mentor at the School of Social Welfare stands out in your mind? How did that person add to your experience here at the School?

Eileen Gambrill. Eileen is one of the greatest mentors on this campus and is a true scholar. Her range of knowledge and her selfless promotion of my best interest has been nothing short of amazing.

What opportunities did the School of Social Welfare offer that enhanced your educational experience?

Jill Duerr Berrick and Barbara Needell at the Center for Social Services Research have created an environment that not only produces some of the best child welfare research in the country, but also provides its students with hands-on, practical research opportunities in a supportive environment.

How would you advise a new student to take advantage of the many resources offered by the University of California? What activities or opportunities outside of the School of Social Welfare did you participate in?

I took advantage of the dual program in public health and got my MPH while a doctoral student in the SSW. There are many such academic opportunities. There are also countless social and artistic events - from concerts at Zellerbach at a student discount, to trips to the city for endless exploration, to protests and acts of civil disobedience - " Berkeley has it all! "

And more will be coming soon....
