Graduate Division Fellowships

Once each year, the University Committee on Fellowships and Graduate Scholarships (University of California, Berkeley, 318 Sproul Hall #5900, Berkeley, CA 94720-5900) conducts a competition for the award of several merit-based fellowships and scholarships. The majority of these awards provide a stipend of $18,000 ($15,000 after the first year) for new students and a maximum of $17,000 for continuing students, in addition to fees and tuition.

Graduate Diversity Fellowships, also administered by this committee, provide financial assistance for doctoral students who demonstrate educational, social, or economic disadvantage, or whose experience will contribute to the overall diversity withing the student body. These awards provide a annual stipend of $16,000 - $21,000, in addition to fees and tuition. To be eligible for these fellowships, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Applications for Fall 2008 must be filed no later than December 1, 2007 for all fellowships and graduate scholarships.

Normative Time Fellowships

These fellowships are intended to provide an incentive to reduce the average amount of time taken to obtain the doctoral degree and to provide an equitable assessment of fees for students advanced to candidacy. There are two types of fellowships available. The Dean's Academic Progress Fellowship is a university-wide, competitive fellowship that offers, for one semester prior to advancement to candidacy, a $7,500 stipend plus fees. For up to two semesters after advancement to candidacy, a student may be eligible for the Dean's Normative Time Fellowship that offers a $7,500 stipend plus fees per semester for a total of $15,000 plus one year's fees. International students are also eligible for these fellowships which cover non-resident tuition as well as fees. Note that students may not engage in any employment for the duration of these awards. Normative time, as set by Graduate Division, is three years for Ph.D. students and four years for M.S.W./Ph.D. students.

Non-University Fellowships

Other public, private, and professional organizations and agencies offer a variety of scholarships and grants. Information is available through the campus Graduate Fellowships Office.

Fee remissions are also available for graduate student researchers and
graduate student instructors.
