PROCEDURE FOR DECLARING SOCIAL WELFARE AS YOUR MAJOR

This document explains how current UCB students can declare the major. The process is different for transfer students.

In the past few years, the Social Welfare major has experienced a very significant increase in demand for the major. Historically, all students interested in the major were able to declare --- this is no longer the case. Declaration of the Social Welfare major is currently limited to 100 students a year. 80 slots are for current UC Berkeley undergraduates; 20 slots are for transfer students.

WHEN YOU SHOULD DECLARE: Current trends indicate that a student should complete the five prerequisites as soon as possible in order to secure a slot for a graduation date that assumes just eight semesters at Cal. Current trends indicate that a student should be finished with the prerequisites by the end of the Fall semester of their sophomore year in order to declare the major and graduate on time. Students who complete the prerequisites too late have to either a) extend their graduation date, b) attend summer sessions in order to take the required core social welfare courses (but there is no guarantee they will be offered in a specific summer), or c) declare another major besides Social Welfare.

GRADUATION DATE: As of Summer 2001, we are only declaring new majors who plan to graduate no earlier than SPRING 2004. Slots for students who

wish to graduate earlier have already been allocated. When you are declared, the Undergraduate Assistant will assign you to the specific semesters to enroll in the four core Social Welfare courses. Your declaration of the major is contingent upon your agreement to that assigned schedule.

SCHEDULE FOR COMPLETION OF THE CORE COURSES FOR THE MAJOR: Students who want a Spring 2004 graduation will complete the four core Social Welfare courses in the following order:

Fall 2002
Spring 2003
Fall 2003
Spring 2004
SW 102
SW 100
SW 103
SW 105

Students who want a Spring 2005 graduation will complete the four core Social Welfare courses in the following order:

Fall 2003
Spring 2004
Fall 2004
Spring 2005
SW 102
SW100
SW103
SW 105

The Undergraduate Advisor must approve any exceptions to a regular sequence.

ALTERNATIVE SCHEDULE IF THE REGULAR SEQUENCE STARTING FALL 2002 IS FULL: It is likely that the Fall 2002/Spring 2004 sequence will not be able to accommodate all students who want to declare the major for a Spring 2004 graduation date. In that case, an alternative schedule might be available for those students who still want to declare the major and graduate by Spring 2004 -- but it would mean taking Social Welfare coursework during Summer 2002 or Summer 2003. Information regarding this possible option will not be final until October.

ORIENTATION TO THE MAJOR: Students who will start the sequence of core Social Welfare courses in Fall are REQUIRED to attend the Social Welfare Orientation in the previous April. Attendance is taken.

PREREQUISITES: There are four prerequisites that must be successfully (at least a C- or Passing grade) completed: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY, INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY, INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS, and THE L&S READING AND COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT.

These courses can be taken at UC Berkeley (a list of specific courses that fulfill these prerequisites is in the yellow program brochure), or equivalent courses (the course title must indicate Introductory, Beginning, Elementary etc.) can be taken at a junior college. Students who complete prerequisites at a junior college must provide a transcript (unofficial is acceptable) for grade verification. Prerequisites may be taken for a grade, or on a pass/no pass basis.

SCHEDULE FOR DECLARING THE MAJOR: If you have completed all of the pre-requisites: You can declare the major immediately assuming slots are available for your desired graduation date. At the time of your declaration, you will be assigned to a specific semester sequence for completing the four core social welfare courses, as well as an anticipated graduation date. If you have not completed all of the pre-requisites, but you are currently enrolled in the remaining course/s needed: You can place yourself on the wait list by filling out the required paperwork. The date you submit the required paperwork to the Undergraduate Advisor will establish your priority date on the wait list. The earliest you can place yourself on the waitlist is the first day of classes in the semester in which you are completing the pre-requisites. For the Fall 2001 semester, that date is August 27, 2001. Note: You must be ENROLLED in a course in order to be assigned a priority date and placed on the waitlist. Tele-Bears wait list status is not sufficient. At the end of the semester, students who successfully complete their remaining prerequisites will be allowed to declare the major, assuming slots are available. If there are not enough slots available to accommodate everyone who completed the prerequisites, the priority dates will be used to determine which students are allowed to declare the major. If you have not completed the prerequisites, and are not enrolled in the remaining course/s needed: You cannot be placed on the wait list. Please speak with the Undergraduate Assistant who can advise you on the process of declaring the major.

PROOF OF COMPLETION OF PREREQUISITES: If you have taken all your prerequisites at UC Berkeley, the Undergraduate Assistant will have access to your transcript. If you have taken any of the prerequisites at another institution, you will need to provide a transcript. The transcript does not need to be official; an unofficial transcript will be acceptable.

AN EXPLANATION OF YOUR STATUS ON THE WAITLIST: The wait list is for students who are completing the prerequisites. Wait list students who successfully complete the prerequisites become eligible to declare the major if space is available. If there are more students eligible than spaces are available, students will be selected from the wait list in chronological order of when they submitted the paperwork to declare the major. Please note: There have been times when sophomores who complete the prerequisites during their Fall semester have not been able to declare because of insufficient space. It is important to understand that any student who has already completed the prerequisites and can be accommodated with their preferred graduation date will be declared ahead of any student on the wait list. This means that while your place on the waitlist is locked by your priority date and no one can get in front of you on the wait list, there will be students who can be declare the major before any of the students on the wait list are declared. All students on the wait list will be notified of their status in terms of declaring the major soon after the posting of grades for that semester. If you have any questions, please contact Sherman Boyson, the Undergraduate Advisor: in person at Room 219 Haviland via email at boyson@uclink4.berkeley.edu by phone at (510) 642-4407.
