MSW REQUIREMENTS

Most courses in the school provide 2 units of academic credit for two hours a week in class. A minimum of 29 academic units is required for the degree. In addition, 19 units (142 days, approximately 1,136 hours) of field work must be completed.

Course Requirements. All students, whatever their area of concentration, are expected to have command of the central components of social work. In the first year, students must complete foundation course work in social policy (SW 220), human behavior in the social environment (SW 200), practice methods (SW 241), and social research (SW 280). In addition, they must take SW 240, Introduction to the Field of Social Welfare and the Profession of Social Work; SW 275, Diversity-Sensitive and Competent Social Work; and SW 400, Introductory Practicum in Social Work Practice, and introduction to the character and purposes of social agencies and institutions in a variety of fields.

In addition, students must complete:

  • additional social policy courses;
  • additional human development courses;
  • additional methods courses and;
  • a second-year research sequence (SW 282A-282B) in the formulation, design, and implementation of social welfare research.
