MSW Field Work
Field Work (SW 400 series course work) has three basic goals:

1) To provide opportunities to apply conceptual learning to real-life practice situations;
2) To develop and refine skills in intervention and professional functioning;
3) To test and evaluate student performance in professional roles

The School has a field work director and a staff of field consultants who maintain relationships with community agencies, oversee student placements, and work with students to plan and evaluate their field experiences.

First-year placements are selected by field work consultants with the students' input. field three full days per week from early September through the end of spring semester. Second-year Management and Planning students take an integrative field work seminar (SW 402).

Field work placements for students with special needs may be arranged during the summer at the discretion of the field director. Those approved for summer placements must enroll through the University's summer sessions program.

Both first- and second-year placements must relate to the student's field of concentration. Students should be aware that field work may require commuting, because placement settings are located throughout the greater Bay Area. Transportation is the student's responsibility. Some settings may require the use of a car.
