COURSE WORK


Course Work Leading to the Pupil Personnel Services Credential with the Advanced Curriculum in School Social Work and the Advanced Curriculum in Child Welfare and Attendance Services

The Berkeley Program in School Social Work has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to recommend its graduates for the School Social Work and Child Welfare and Attendance Credentials necessary for employment in California public schools.

Social welfare students who wish to earn certification for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential must meet all the requirements for the MSW degree and their specialization requirements. PPSC candidates must enroll in the School's Children and Families specialization or must complete certain Children and Families courses.

In addition to the core requirements of the MSW program, PPSC-bound students must complete the following courses in their two-year program of study and field work:

SW 234A: Law and Social Welfare--Children and Families First or
Second Year

Second Year

SW 230: Child and Family Policy Spring of
First Year
2 units
SW 243: Direct Practice in Child and Family Settings Spring of
First Year
2 units
SW 400: Introductory Practicum--Children and Families Fall of

SW 241B: Foundations of Social Work Practice: Groups, Organizations, Communities Spring of
First Year
2 units
SW 250W: Standard Tests in Education Fall 1 unit
SW 401: Field Instruction (A school-based placement is required in the second year).

The above courses also meet MSW and C&F specialization requirements.

Curriculum in Child Welfare and Attendance Services

Students seeking additional certification in Child Welfare and Attendance Services are required to incorporate specific content related to attendance laws and the rights of minors.

A PPSC student in Children and Families is likely to undertake an academic program such as the following:

SW 200, Human Behavior and the Social Environment 2 units
SW 205, Psychosocial Problems and Psychopathology 2 units
SW 220, Introduction to Social Policy 2 units
SW 240, Introduction to the Field of Social Welfare and the Profession of Social Work 1 unit
SW 241A, Foundations of Social Work Practice: Generalist Social Work 2 units
SW 275, Diversity in Social Welfare 2 units
SW 400, Introductory Practicum - Children and Families 1 unit
SW 401, Field Instruction
(Completed in a setting serving relevant populations.)
2 units

Semester 2 (Spring)
SW 230, Child and Family Policy 2 units
SW 241B, Foundations of Social Work Practice: Groups, Organizations, Communities 2 units
SW 243, Direct Practice in Child and Family Settings 2 units
*SW 250V, School of Social Work: Child Welfare and Attendance in Social Welfare 1 unit

* SW 250V is required if you are interested in obtaining the Child Welfare and Attendance Credential along with the PPSC.

Note: Standard Tests in Education (SW 250W) and Child Welfare and Attendance in Social Welfare (SW 250V) are usually offered in alternating years. This year, SW 250V will be offered in Spring 2002; SW 250W will be offered in the Fall of 2001.
