OTHER MSW PROGRAMS

Social Welfare/Public Health Dual Degree Program. After admission to a graduate school at Berkeley, a student may apply for a second professional degree in another field. The Dual Degree Program offers interdisciplinary preparation in the fields of public health and social welfare leading to the MSW and MPH degrees. Its objective is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to promote health, prevent disease, and enhance the delivery of health and social services in the community. The program allows students to build interdisciplinary skills and professional identity by developing and understanding of the breadth of each field, the interrelationships of the fields, and focused content in particular speciality areas. For information, contact Bari Cornet, 643-6663.

Social Welfare/Law Concurrent Degree Program. Students may concurrently earn the MSW and JD degrees. For information, contact Paul Terrell, 642-8039.

Pupil Personnel Services Credential. School social workers in California must hold the Pupil Personnel Services Credential. In addition to the requirements for the MSW degree, certain field work experiences in school-based settings are required, along with special course work. For information, contact Cathy Ralph, 642-8251.

California IV-E Child Welfare Training Project. The IV-E program prepares approximately 20 students each year for careers in public child welfare services. Students complete a specialized academic curriculum including two years of field work in either a county welfare unit or a closely related agency serving child welfare clients. Trainees receive annual stipends of $18,500 for two years in exchange for a commitment to work at least two years in a county welfare service agency upon graduation. For information, contact Shaaron Gilson, 642-2424.

Dual Master's in International and Area Studies. Graduate students in Social Welfare are eligible to apply for admission to a concurrent master's degree program in International and Area Studies. This involves an additional year of course work constructed to compliment the MSW program with a detailed knowledge of contemporary international issues or particular world areas or countries. Advanced language skills and a comprehensive exam are required. For information, contact Professor David Leonard, 642-1140.
