INTRODUCTION

This handbook provides basic information about the MSW program at Berkeley. Our program, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, prepares students for advanced professional social work practice in a variety of service fields.

Most of your MSW classes, along with the School's administrative, research, and faculty offices, and the Social Welfare Library and computer labs, are located in Haviland Hall. The Commons Room Lounge (room 12), available to all students for snacks and soft drinks, is in the Haviland Hall basement. MSW student mailboxes are on the first floor, opposite room 118. Check your campus and your e-mail as often as possible -- these serve as key communication links between faculty, staff, and students. Barbara Haden, the School's Graduate Assistant, also edits an MSW e-mail newsletter with timely information about deadlines, meetings, financial aid, and special educational activities. All students are encouraged to establish e-mail accounts. A roster of faculty offices and telephone and e-mail addresses is appended to this handbook.

The bulletin boards on the first floor are also used for posting information about financial aid, courses, special lectures and workshops, student meetings, and school and university announcements. A board next to room 117 is devoted to field work information while the board next to the Commons Room is available for student announcements.

The graduate assistant for the MSW Program, Barbara Haden, can be found in 118 Haviland. Her job is to assist all MSW students in dealing with the administrative complexities of their program. Feel free to call upon her for advice about any academic problem (degree requirements; school, Graduate Division or University policies; petition forms; etc.). Be sure to contact her before taking any direct action through the Graduate Division or the Office of the Registrar. She may be reached at bhaden@uclink4.berkeley.edu or by phone at (510) 642-4406.

A schedule of social welfare classes is included in the Orientation packet and is also available on the school's web page: http://socialwelfare.berkeley.edu. Students are urged to use this schedule rather than the University's Schedule of Classes which does not reflect last-minute changes in class time and locations. BEAR LINK (web access) at http://bearlink.berkeley.edu also provides the most current schedule information.
