COURSE EXEMPTIONS AND WAIVERS

Students often enter the MSW program with considerable course background in the social work field, either from BSW programs or other undergraduate majors. These students may be exempt from one or more of the School's foundation requirements, i.e., SW 200, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, SW 220, Introduction to Social Welfare Policy, SW 241AB, Foundations of Social Work Practice, SW 275, Diversity in Social Welfare, and SW 280, Introduction to Social Welfare Research.

Course exemptions will be given to students who have mastered the essential content in the basic social work curriculum areas. For SW 200 and 280, mastery is evidenced by passing a special competency examination given by the School. For other foundation courses, mastery is evidenced by confirming your satisfactory completion of equivalent materials. This can be done by submitting relevant course outlines, work samples, and grades to the faculty chair of the appropriate curriculum planning group. Barbara Haden can identify these faculty for you. When exemptions are granted, Barbara Haden must be notified in writing by the CPG chair.

Information concerning the scheduling of the Fall SW 200 competency examination is mailed to incoming students. Information concerning the scheduling of the Spring SW 280 competency examination is distributed at the end of the Fall semester. Examination results are posted before classes begin outside room 118 Haviland Hall. Competency exams are fully voluntary; there is no penalty for failing the exams.

Students who are exempted from a course do not receive a grade or unit credit toward the MSW; they are permitted, rather, to forego the required course in favor of an elective. Your specialization adviser can help you select an appropriate substitute course.
