ENROLLMENT, REGISTRATION, WITHDRAWAL, READMISSION

Enrollment and Registration

The Office of the Registrar, 120 Sproul Hall, mails registration packets to all new students during the summer. The packets contain a billing statement requesting that fees be paid by mail by July 15. If you have not paid, you can do so in person August 20 through August 24 in the Cashier's Office, 140 University Hall. A $50 penalty may be assessed if you miss the August 24 deadline.

To plan your class schedule for the Fall, 2001, term and for subsequent terms, use your Curriculum Planning Guide, course descriptions, and the social welfare class schedule. Be sure to account for all required courses.

Required Fall, 2001, courses for new students include:

  • SW 200, Human Behavior and the Social Environment (2 units)
  • SW 220, Introduction to Social Welfare Policy (2 units)
  • SW 240, Introduction to the Field of Social Welfare and the Profession of Social Work (1 unit)
  • SW 241A, Foundations of Social Work Practice (2 units)
  • SW 275, Diversity in Social Welfare (2 units)
  • SW 400, First Year MSW Field Seminar (1 unit)
  • SW 401, Field Instruction (2 units)

In addition, students in the Child and Family (C&F), Community Mental Health (CMH), Health, and Gerontology specializations must enroll in SW 205, Psychosocial Problems and Psychopathology (2 units), while Management and Planning (MAP) students must enroll in SW 210, Group, Organizational, and Community Dynamics (2 units).

If you plan to seek an exemption from a required course, you still must enroll in the course through Tele-BEARS. Later, if you are granted an exemption, drop the course through Tele-BEARS and add an elective in its place.

You will use a SID (student ID) number, a PIN (Personal ID) number, and course control numbers to enroll in classes. These numbers (in the orientation packet) allow access to the Tele-BEARS system. Course control numbers can be found in the University's Schedule of Classes (available at the ASUC Bookstore for 50 cents) or on the web at http://schedule.berkeley.edu. Complete instructions for accessing Tele-BEARS by phone or web site is also available in the Schedule of Classes.

After scheduling through Tele-BEARS August 20-24, you should pick up your Confirmed Class Schedule in 120 Haviland Hall after 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27. The CCS includes an ASUC Membership Card which entitles you to discounts and promotions throughout the year.

You must be a full-time registered student to meet MSW degree and residency requirements, and to be eligible for financial aid. The School defines "full-time" as a minimum of 10 units per semester.

Your official identification as a student at Berkeley is the Cal Photo ID card. If you have not had your photograph taken for the card, please do so as soon as possible. If you are a newly admitted student, you can have your photograph taken as soon as you receive your Tele-BEARS registration form for the semester. The first card is free of charge; replacement cards are $10 (non-refundable). For more information, contact the Cal Photo ID Office, Unit 2 Residence Halls East Dining Center, 2650 Haste Street, 643-6839.

Withdrawal and Readmission

Naturally we hope that no student will find it necessary to discontinue their program before completing degree requirements. If circumstances are such that you believe you must withdraw, please discuss the situation with your specialization adviser and field work consultant. Then see Barbara Haden for a withdrawal petition and further instructions. Please remember that readmission to the School and the University is not automatic. A student must reapply according to specific procedures and deadlines. Please check with Admissions in 128 Haviland if you have any questions regarding this.
