EXAMPLES OF COURSES SERVING TO FULFILL
SOCIAL SCIENCE THEORY REQUIREMENT

In its proposal to change the name of the doctoral degree offered by the School from DSW to Ph.D., the doctoral committee made explicit the requirement that students "complete course work focused on basic discipline social science theory, the number of these courses to be determined by the student's examination committee." Students may, at the discretion of the chair of their qualifying examination, use independent study in their examination theory area toward the satisfaction of this requirement. The chair of your qualifying examination must verify that you have satisfied this requirement before you apply for the examination.

If you do not yet have a qualifying examination chair at the time you wish to take a social science course, you may see your faculty advisor for suggestions. Keep in mind that, once you have selected a qualifying exam chair, it is up to the chair to determine (as stated above) if additional social science theory courses are required before arranging for the qualifying exam.

The list below is intended to provide EXAMPLES of acceptable course work and is NOT exhaustive.
