PhD
and MSW/PhD Application Process
Applications will become available in mid-September,
2008. Applicants must submit an application to
the University as well as fill out an applicant summary
form for the department. This application and form are
available online through the Graduate Division’s
website or by following the links below. We strongly encourage
you to use the online application. If you are unable to
do so please contact the SSW Admissions Office at socwelf@berkeley.edu,
for alternate instructions.
The
following items are required for admission:
1) Graduate
Application for Admission and Fellowships.
The online application includes the following:
• Statement of Purpose
• Personal History Statement
• Three Letters of Recommendation— two professional
and one academic letter preferred. Letters can be completed
online by your recommenders or sent in directly to the
School

Applicant Summary Form. Includes a section
for your C.V./resume. Available through the online graduate
application or directly from this website at the following
link, PhD
and MSW/PhD Applicant Summary Forms.

Sample of Scholarly Written Work
4)
Official Transcripts. One set is required
from all universities or colleges attended. Transcripts
must be in a sealed envelope from the college or university.
5) Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
The School requires the General Test only. Test scores
must be reported to both the department and to the University
from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Remember to
include both the department code (5001 for Social Work)
and the institution code (4833 for UC Berkeley) to ensure
that your scores are reported.
TOEFL Scores (English as a second language).
International students may be required to take the TOEFL
in addition to the GRE. Please visit www.grad.berkeley.edu/prospective
for specific guidelines.
**Applicants are urged to take the GRE
and TOEFL examinations by early November to ensure that
scores are received in time for review.
6) Application fee. $70 for domestic
applicants and $90 for international students, payable
to UC Regents, must be submitted when you apply.
Current or Previously Registered UC Berkeley Applicants:
• If you are a current UC Berkeley
graduate student, substitute the Graduate Division application
with a Petition to Add or Change a Major form.

• If you have been previously registered
at UC Berkeley as a graduate student, substitute the Graduate
Division application with the Application for Readmission
form. This form is available from the Registrar’s
website at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/GeneralInfo/elecforms.html.
Reapplicants:
If you have applied to the University within the last
two years, you may reactivate your application. To do
this, the following documents are required:
• Graduate Application for Admission and Fellowships
• Applicant Summary Form. Includes a section
for your updated C.V./resume. Available through the online
application or directly from this website.
• One additional Letter of Recommendation
• Official Transcripts of New Coursework Completed.
Only if you have enrolled in additional classes since
your last application.
• Application fee. $70 for domestic applicants and
$90 for international students, payable to UC Regents,
must be submitted when you apply
