Application Process

PhD and MSW/PhD Application Process
Applications will become available in mid-September, 2008. Applicants must submit an application to the University as well as fill out an applicant summary form for the department. This application and form are available online through the Graduate Division’s website or by following the links below. We strongly encourage you to use the online application. If you are unable to do so please contact the SSW Admissions Office at socwelf@berkeley.edu, for alternate instructions.

The following items are required for admission:
1) Graduate Application for Admission and Fellowships. The online application includes the following:
• Statement of Purpose
• Personal History Statement
• Three Letters of Recommendation— two professional and one academic letter preferred. Letters can be completed online by your recommenders or sent in directly to the School

2) Applicant Summary Form. Includes a section for your C.V./resume. Available through the online graduate application or directly from this website at the following link, PhD and MSW/PhD Applicant Summary Forms.

3) Sample of Scholarly Written Work

4) Official Transcripts. One set is required from all universities or colleges attended. Transcripts must be in a sealed envelope from the college or university.

5) Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The School requires the General Test only. Test scores must be reported to both the department and to the University from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Remember to include both the department code (5001 for Social Work) and the institution code (4833 for UC Berkeley) to ensure that your scores are reported.
TOEFL Scores (English as a second language). International students may be required to take the TOEFL in addition to the GRE. Please visit www.grad.berkeley.edu/prospective for specific guidelines.
**Applicants are urged to take the GRE and TOEFL examinations by early November to ensure that scores are received in time for review.

6) Application fee. $70 for domestic applicants and $90 for international students, payable to UC Regents, must be submitted when you apply.
